India crushed to end Sri Lankan drought

There we have it. Sri Lanka has finally claimed a win after 12 consecutive ODI losses and has ended India's ruthless winning streak.

An inspired Sri Lankan side has finally exposed the unshakable Indian side who were made to look foolish and fragile. Without the in-form Virat Kohli, Sri Lanka took at as a blessing to dismiss India for a bleak 112 runs.

Rohit Sharma's maiden captaincy was brought the ultimate test as Sri Lanka opted to bowl first on a good looking surface for the first ODI of the series. However, things went completely pear-shaped as Sri Lankan bowlers showed a thrilling display of bowling to have India on their knees at 7/29 courtesy of Suranga Lakmal's 4/13.

It is fair to say that India's dignity as the powerhouse of world cricket was all but going to be dismantled as they were looking to be dismissed for the lowest total in ODI cricket. Whilst India was not bowled out for the lowest total in ODI history (35 runs Zimbabwe), MS Dhoni restored some credibility in the team with a fighting 87 ball 65 to see India reach an unlikely 112 runs.

A somewhat shaky start to the Sri Lankan innings only unleashed recently replaced captain Upul Tharanga and a motivated middle order to get the job done with 7 wickets left to spare. I have to say that it is great to see Sri Lanka finally breath again after what has been a dark road on the limited overs side. I can for sure say that after 12 consecutive ODI losses, Sri Lanka was not expected to make such a dramatic and thrilling entrance into the ODI series. And boy oh boy have they added some flair to the competition.

However, I would like to see Sri Lanka take the confidence into the next game but not to get arrogant. This is most likely been just a bad day at the office for the Indian side and they will be hungry to restore the balance of the series in the next game. Hence, Sri Lanka, whilst they still have the momentum, must utilise it in continuing to be on the front foot and really stamp their authority as a rejuvenated team.

Finally, let's hope for another thrilling match where both teams claw their way into the series.
