Sri Lanka suffocate in New Delhi as Kohli's freakish form continues
Heavy pollution in New Dehli has only added to the pain of the Sri Lankans in New Dehli in the 3rd Test.
Winning the toss and electing to bat, King Kholi's freakish form continued as he scored his second consecutive double century. His 287 ball 243 completely dismantled the Sri Lankan bowling attack, dispatching them to all parts of the ground. His partners in demolition Murali Vijay and Rohit Sharma saw India power to a declaration at 5/536 before having an early strike at Sri Lanka.
Things simply went from bad to worse for Sri Lanka. Losing opener Dimuth Karunaratne from the first ball of the innings highlighted the series they are having. With Sri Lanka left begging at 3/75, it was great to see Angelo Mathews return to form with a fighting 57 not out at stumps along with Dinesh Chandimal (25*) to leave the tourists at 3/131 at stumps. It is certain that Sri Lanka are not out of this game yet. What they need is for Mathews and Chandimal to take their starts and compile a big score. Sri Lanka needs one of these to take the batting to India and demonstrate the talent that they possess.
In saying this, if Sri Lanka manages to compile a first innings total within 50 runs of India's mammoth score it will demonstrate several things. That not only has Sri Lanka begun to find their form but also the fact that they have shown that they can be competitive. Sri Lanka for most of this series, unfortunately, has not shown any signs of competitiveness. India has gone through most of this series besides the first test, unchallenged, especially Virat Kohli who is showing that he is simply unstoppable.
I still believe that something special is going to emerge from this series for Sri Lanka. It is tough tours such as these that will bring the best out of teams. Hence, I would like to see someone from Sri Lanka stand up and demonstrate that they have not lost hope and that the dust will soon clear.
Let's hope for a good competitive and inspiring day of test cricket in New Dehli for the 3rd Test.
